Response to Sandy Hook Tragedy

Assalam Alaikum Dear parents,
The recent horrific incident in Connecticut left everyone in shock, and rightfully so, and in fear of the safety of students at school. I followed the news, like all of you, and my heart broke for the Sandy Hook school community. May Allah protect all children from such evil.

Some parents contacted me and indicated concern about the security at Granada. I would like to inform you of our current security measures and in light of recent events, we will examine these measures and update as necessary. Alhamdulillah we have been in the same building since 1994, and Alhamdulillah we have always been safe. In addition, our school is in a busy area with close access to police and emergency response personnel.

This is what currently is in place at Granada:
  • All students are supervised at all times and in all areas of the school (classroom, playground, cafeteria and the masjid) by adults who carry cell phones and can immediately report anyone on the premises who doesn’t belong.
  • We have regular drills for fire, earthquake, shelter-in-place and lock-down. Our students and staff are trained for different emergencies. Just last month on 11/29, we had a lock-down drill under the supervision of Santa Clara Police officers. The SC police informed us that because our classroom doors open inward we have the added advantage of being able to barricade them which most other schools can’t do as their doors typically open outward.
  • The main entrance to the school is under the supervision of the receptionist, and we have substitutes for her when she goes on her break. So the front entrance is always monitored.
  • We screen whoever enters the school. Visitors or volunteers need to sign in and wear a name-tag.
  • The gates to the parking lots that surround the playground are locked from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm every day.
  • On Fridays we lock all the doors after the student lunch.
  • We do not allow MCA or Crescent Cuisine patrons to go through our hallways.
  • All our hallways have cameras videotaping any activity.

Based on the following two resources (Psychologist, School), I compiled some guidelines for parents and teachers:

As our nation continues to process this tragedy, there will be ongoing discussions taking place about the how and why in the coming days and weeks. As adults, we find ourselves in a position of not only having to process what happened, but we must also find a way to explain such horrific events to children.

We know that each family will deal with this tragedy in their own unique way. Some families will find it appropriate to allow their children to watch the ongoing news coverage and to talk about the events openly. Others, particularly those with younger children, may choose to shield their children from the news altogether with the concerns that their children will not be able to process the information. We strongly recommend that children (six and younger, especially) be shielded from discussions and news stories about the tragedy.

If you decide to talk to your child, please observe the following:
  • Reassure children that the school is safe and go over the school’s security measures. What happened last Friday was horrific but extremely rare. Fifty-six million children go to school every day, and statistically they are safer than anywhere else.
  • It is natural to feel upset and even frightened, but it is important not to show it in front of our kids. Otherwise we will do more harm than good.
  • It is very important that kids maintain their normal routines, and their exposure to media coverage of the Sandy Hook shooting, particularly television, must be limited.
  • When talking to kids about what happened in Connecticut and fielding questions, keep the lines of communication open and answer honestly but in developmentally appropriate language (talk at a level they can understand).
  • Older students can handle discussions about the cases of violence in schools and the things they can do to help keep their schools safe, such as reporting strangers on campus or being observant of their classmates’ emotional states.

Knowing that each individual family will deal with this issue in their own way, we will be taking a specific approach in addressing the Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy:
  • The school will not be making any reference to the tragedy during morning announcements. This will ensure that we respect the decision by those families who have chosen not to expose their children to this news.
  • At the elementary level (K-5), teachers will be instructed to not lead any classroom discussion about the tragedy. If a student does pose a question to a teacher, the teacher will listen to the student, and when appropriate, direct the student to talk to her later in private.
  • At the upper grade level (6-8), classroom discussion may occur, particularly in those classes where it is appropriate to have such a discussion.
May Allah always protect us from all harm.

Sincerely,
Nihad M. Mourad

Dear parents,
Assalam Alaikum!

MCA Next Door Building Kickoff Event
As you are aware Granada is a service institution of MCA, who is currently in the process of purchasing the building next door (3033 Scott Blvd). This is a perfect location to expand MCA and GIS. This expansion will include GIS classrooms, more outdoor space and most importantly an indoor gym. This expansion will also help us plan for a high school in the future, insha Allah. Expanding GIS in such a close proximity also means that we can expand our student body with minimum cost to overhead. To know more about this project, please come tonight to MCA to attend the Next Door Building Kickoff Event in the Khadijah Banquet Hall at 6:30pm. Free dinner and free babysitting will be provided.

First Trimester Awards
Congratulations to grades 6-8 students who won awards for the first trimester. Please check their names: Academic Awards (Honor Roll and Subject Awards),and Citizenship and Attendance Awards. The award ceremony will take place on Tuesday, December 18 at 9:30am in the Men's area of the masjid.

You may send the order form with a check with your child or drop it off at the Front Desk. To order T-shirts with credit card, please see Linda Zielinski in the Business Office on these days:

Upcoming Student Activities

Assalam Alaikum dear parents and Happy Monday!
I hope your family enjoyed the break. I would like to share with you our upcoming activities:

Lockdown Drill
Granada’s commitment to safety includes on-going emergency preparedness planning, response training and partnerships with our community's first responders for all emergencies. This week, on Thursday 11/29 at 9am, the school will conduct Code Red Lockdown drill (with local law enforcement). The drill requires the students and teachers to stay in their classrooms and barricade the doors and windows. Then officers from the Santa Clara police will check these barricades and instruct us on making them better. I wanted to keep you informed so you will not be worried if the students mention the lock down in the classroom or the presence of police officers on our school premises. May Allah always protect us.

Buddy Reading
This week our students will have their first reading buddies session!  Reading Buddies is a unique opportunity to build community and to encourage mixed age learning.  Reading with buddies can help students build confidence in their reading, and can encourage children to read for pleasure. In the past, students have listed Reading Buddies among their favorite Reading Day activities.

Book Fair
The Scholastic Book Fair will be coming to Granada next week. Students and families have a chance to visit the fair and purchase books.
For more info, check the book fair Webpage

Dear parents,
Assalam Alaikum.  Next week the 6-8 grade students will have their end-of-trimester finals on Monday 11/19, Tuesday 11/20 and Wednesday 11/21. These days are minimum days (8am to 12pm) for all students. Extended Care will be available as usual until 6pm. School will be closed on Thursday 11/22 and Friday 11/23 for Thanksgiving Break.

The Scholastic Book Fair will take place during the first week of December (12/3 - 12/7).  Please visit the Granada Book Fair webpage for more information. Volunteers are needed, please sign up at this link: Sign-up Page.

Due to the end of Daylight Saving Time, the third Khutbah at MCA, which  our grades 4-8 students attend, was cancelled. We changed the schedule and our students will be at the first khutbah from 12:15 to 12:45. This change affected lunch time for grades 5-8. Students will have lunch at 12:45 in the patio area instead of Crescent Cuisine, which is packed with customers at that time. Students will not be able to purchase food from Crescent Cuisine on Friday. Please make sure they bring lunch from home.

K-5 boys received reminders about bathroom manners from their Islamic Studies teachers. I would like to request you to also go over these manners with the boys at home. It is important that they receive a consistent message from home and school. The main points to remember are: 1) Give others privacy by not peeking, 2) Be quick and quiet, 3) Sit when using toilet, 4) Clean with water, and 5) Flush toiled when finished.

This week at GIS:
  • Science Night for grades 5-8 parents and students (Wednesday 11/14 at 7pm)
  • Spelling Bee Assembly for grades 5-8 (Thursday 11/15 at 1:45pm)
Sincerely,
Nihad Mourad

Good News

Dear parents,
Assalam Alaikum!

Our students are enjoying the new grass, alhamdulillah! The installation was completed last Wednesday and since then the students were able to play on the turf. This project was made possible due to the donations of Granada students and their families from the Walk-a-Thon (May 2012). I would like to acknowledge a Granada parent who donated materials and his construction crew to work on this project saving us around $9K. May Allah reward you, Br. Abdul-Majid Garfinkel (father of Aleema - 5B and Haseeb - 3B).

More good news! The following students are the Spelling Bee winners in grades 5-8. Congratulations to:
  • Fariha Ahmed (5A)
  • Naimah Khan (5B)
  • Rizq Khateeb (6A)
  • Nabeel Sabzwari (7A)
  • Sabreen Abdelrahman (8A)
The next competition will be among the five class finalists to determine the school Spelling Bee Champion. The event is scheduled next week on Thursday, November 15.

Last week grades 2-8 students had an opportunity to learn about the two main presidential candidates and to vote for one of them. We introduced this activity to educate our students about the democratic process and the importance of their participation in the election. The majority of our students voted for President Barak Obama for another term.

Dear parents,
Assalam Alaikum! I pray that your family is enjoying these blessed days of Eidul-Adha. We are looking forward to the Eid field trips planned on Monday 10/29. Students are going on four field trips and all teachers and administrators are participating in the fun. Please note:
  • Monday is a regular school day in terms of timings: drop-off  at 8am and pick-up at 3:15pm.
  • Uniform is not required on Monday for the field trips.
  • Students will start the day by enjoying potluck breakfast in their classrooms then they will go on their designated field trips.
  • If you are a chaperone for any of the field trips, please arrive to school at least half an hour before the departure time.
Last Wednesday our students participated in the Hajj Simulation organized by our Islamic Studies team and supported by many parent volunteers. The goal of the event was to help our students better understand the Hajj rituals. It was also an opportunity for our older students to practice presentation and leadership skills. Finally, it was an activity where older and younger students interact as "buddies."

We concluded the day with an assembly for grades 5-8 where 8th grade students presented the collected Udhiya/Qurbani money to Br. Humayim, a representative from Islamic Relief, and Br. Feras Alhlou, a representative from Syrian American Council. The final sum was more than $9700, alhamdulillah. May Allah reward you for your participation as volunteers or donors. Together we make our students' school experience enriching.

Sincerely,

Nihad Mourad

Dear parents,
Assalam Alaikum and good morning!
Today is an In-service day for teachers, and a minimum day for students (dismissal time is 12:00 noon). We do have an extended care service until 6pm ($7/hour).

The first progress report was sent home on Friday. Please make sure to review it with your child and check with his/her teachers if you have any questions. The first trimester ends on November 30th.

Today is the last day for udhiya/qurbani donations. We are very grateful of the generosity of GIS students and parents; we exceeded our goal of sending 40 udhiyas ($4200), and we raised more than $6K. May Allah reward you greatly!

The October newsletter was due to be mailed home last Thursday. However, it is delayed and, insha Allah, should be mailed today or tomorrow. We are understaffed in the office due to the absence of Office Specialist, Sr. Humera Haq, on medical leave.

Have a great day and keep dry in the rainy weather.

Sincerely,

Nihad Mourad

Dear parents,
Assalam Alaikum!

Tomorrow is insha Allah the first of Dhul-Hijjah, the start of the "best days of the year," as described by prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. May Allah help us worship and serve Him as best as we can on these days, and may Allah grant us forgiveness on the Day Arafat!
We have a drive to collect udhiya/qurbani and send it to Syria through Islamic Relief. We have been raising between $3,000 and $4,000 for the last few years. Can we beat our record? For more info, check this letter to parents.

Did you notice that the work on the grass area started last weekend? The area will be blocked off for 3-4 weeks. Looking forward to beautiful turf for our students to enjoy.

The board invited the parents for a meeting next week on Tuesday 10/23 at 7:00pm in the school library to share updates about the school expansion plans, which includes acquiring a building next to the current facility. Please join us!

Have a great day!

Temperature today is expected to be around 90 degrees at 3:00pm. If this is the case we will have an indoor dismissal.

Parents who are picking up students other than their children should not use the drive-thru. Please stop at the front desk to ensure your name is on the Emergency Form of the student and then you may pick up the child.

Punctuality
I would like to remind parents to drop their children to school on time. Our classrooms are open at 7:45am. Please help your child get a good start of the day by being in class on time.
